How many other people don’t know about this?

October 24, 2007

I first heard about this on the evening news just tonight. I hope that someone can benefit from it. We were watching a Boston channel, but maybe there are other states that are offering the same benefit to their vets and the word hasn’t gotten out yet.

Unclaimed Money Available For Iraq War Veterans

(WBZ) BOSTON Thousands of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan qualify to get a tax-free bonus from the state of Massachusetts, but many don’t know about it.

“I had no idea. My buddy told me about it,” said Canton veteran James Miller. “He stumbled in one day and he said, ‘Hey, did you hear about your thousand dollars?’ (I said,) ‘Not really, why don’t you tell me about it.’”

More than $9.5 million has not been claimed because more than half of the veterans entitled to the free money have not filled out the paper work.

The checks come straight from the treasurer’s office and the process is simple.

“If you are a Massachusetts resident and you served, it’s either $500 or a thousand dollars tax-free,” said State Treasurer Tim Cahill. “Come up and get it.”

For those who don’t come and get it, the state could be calling them.

Sen. Scott Brown is sponsoring the legislation, which calls for veterans to be notified.

“It’s there. They earned it, and they should advantage of it. How often does the state give you free money?” Brown said.

It’s estimated that 13,600 veterans are entitled to a check.

The treasurer’s office did the same thing for vets from Vietnam and World War II, and some of that bonus money is still unclaimed.

~~~~~ INTERMISSION ~~~~~
October 21, 2007
In case you are one of the 3 or four people that read my blog you will notice that lately, I have hit a lull of sorts. Writing doesn’t have the appeal that it did just a short time ago. Reading doesn’t interest me.  Housework is and was always at the bottom of my list! Shopping doesn’t flip my skirt at all. Knitting seems to be consuming me and I am having it have it’s way with me. I learned a long time ago that to trying to force your will upon something just doesn’t work. And there’s not alot of satisfaction in having to work so hard at it in order for it to come to fruition. So anyway. I’m going to be taking a break for awhile. Isn’t it funny that when you blog that you can’t just stop, that you need to explain why? It just amuses the daylights out of me. If anyone wants to drop me a line, just comment on one of my posts and I will get it in my email. So, ’til then……….
My lost post
July 15, 2007
I somehow managed to lose track of this post and just found it in my draft folder, so even though the trip is over, I just decided to throw it into the blog anyway.
Providing that Sweet Baboo’s cold is on the way out (just when you figure you’ve got everything under control, along comes something over which you have no power) we will be leaving tomorrow. My To-Do list is looking SOOOOOO good.
  • Knitted hat that I wanted to make for the young’un — check check (I made two)
  • Someone to check on Sadie and make sure she is fed and watered — check (Darling Daughter will torment the cat while we’re gone)
  • Check out TJ Maxx one more time before we go for Sis’s face cream — check — actually made 3 trips and got something every time. I will for sure be her favorite sister!!
  • Ordered the pics of GrandDolly that I had taken but not had printed yet — will pick them up later tonight.
  • Quilt completed — label attached — wrapped and ready to go.
  • Beading materials and tools — I couldn’t figure out what to take so I’m taking it all.
  • Extra batteries for camera — check
  • Odds and ends of baby things that DD wants her cousin to have — sort of her donation to the cause — check
I also cut Sweet Baboo’s hair, did 4 loads of wash and put that away, cleaned both bathrooms (I can’t stand coming home to a house that needs cleaning after being away — I want to just empty out my suitcase and put my feet up.) So I’m ready to go — it’s going to be so much fun!!!
